Culture

On October 25th of the just ended year, Beijing residents and visitors
to Beijing had an opportunity to witness a very special evening, which
featured Ethiopian Arts and Culture. "Arts for Ethiopia"
was a fundraising event, which included authentic Ethiopian cuisine,
an African Fashion Show featuring Ethiopian Clothing as well as Ethiopian
Arts and Handicrafts.
The successful and enjoyable evening, which hosted more than 300
people, was a culmination of at least a year of preparation and
hard work done by the organizers who included members of the Ethiopian
Community in Beijing. Many sponsors were included in the evening's
success, some of which include International as well as local Companies
and Institutions: Nokia, British Airways, the Western Academy of
Beijing, Sodexho Food Services, Nestle, Empire Graphics and other
local as well as foreign and Ethiopian companies.
The African Fashion show was one of the highlights of the evening
featuring African models from several African nations as well as
foreign models, all of which are living in Beijing. The models have
shown of the bright colored Ethiopian traditional Clothes of men
and women. Guests that evening were also entertained by local expat
band "Strange Visitations" and Ethiopian music together
with that of other African countries was provided by Ethiopian DJ
S-Press which mesmerize the audience. Another special part of the
evening's program was fabulous raffle prizes for which tickets were
purchased and the lucky winners took home special gifts including
Ethiopian arts.
The Audience has also a chance to see handicrafts and painting
made on piece of clothes and animals skins which reflects the art
and culture of this ancient country. On the occasion, these pieces
of crafts were made available for sale.
The Ethiopian Community in Beijing prepared the delicious Ethiopian
cuisine and people couldn't get enough of the wonderful flavors
and aromas. It was complemented by traditional coffee ceremony,
which give the chance for guests to smell and test aroma of Ethiopian
coffee. This was a unique experience for most of the guests, as
most of them don't have prior knowledge that coffee was the Ethiopian
gift to the world.
This can be judged from the comment given by some of the people
who attend the event. Linner Workman, Charity Committee Organizer
at Western Academy of Beijing said " The chance to sample a
glimpse of Ethiopian culture in Beijing seemed too bizarre to miss
and it proved to be a very positive appetizer to entice a future
visit to this corner of Africa. Unfortunately my previous knowledge
of Ethiopia was mainly derived from media coverage of crises at
times when there is little focus on culture or chance to see the
charisma of the people. I was not expecting the variety in the cuisine
and from the fashions and dance to the aroma of freshly brewed thick
coffee, it was an evening of very pleasant surprises. Thanks for
introducing me to a part of the world I knew very little about."
According to Lena Koh Maltesen, Fashion and Home stylist and writer,
"the Arts for Ethiopia was a memorable and enjoying evening
for my whole family. We had no idea of what Ethiopian food would
be like until that evening when we sampled the delicious curries,
stews and bread. Tantalizing! And the fashion show was both entertaining
and enlightening. Gave me some fabulous ideas to design Ethiopian-inspired
evening wear with all that gorgeous color and curves. And I must
say that Ethiopian music and dance had my feet tapping all evening!"
The event has evoked nostalgia to Sarah and Dean Harris, teachers
in Western Academy of Beijing formerly living in Ethiopia. They
have sum up their experience as an enjoyable evening of tastes and
smells from a place very dear to them.
Overall "Arts for Ethiopia" was a successful and enlightening
evening geared not only to raise money for charity but also to highlight
and involve people in the beauty and culture that is Ethiopia a
country full of mystery with thousands years of history. The event
was an enlightening moment particularly for those who have never
had the chance to get first hand experience of this historical nation
- Ethiopia.
